Spotlight on Tina, our FATCA and CRS expert

23 September 2016

Name:
Tina Corteen

Role:
Associate Director, FATCA & CRS; and
Director of Moore Fund Administration (Isle of Man) Limited

Years with the business:
Two and a half years

A little bit about you?
I am bubbly, vivacious and love a challenge. I love building up valued relationships whether it is with colleagues, clients or other service providers. I enjoy helping people and offering support and guidance where I can as well as learning new things about myself.

Career path to date:
I have worked in many different sectors but the majority of my experience comes from working in the funds industry in the Isle of Man, where I worked for over 23 years. I started as an administrator and moved up through the ranks to manage my own team and group of clients and then eventually became Managing Director for a European-based funds business.

My job entails…
Dealing with all Automatic Exchange of Information initiatives such as FATCA and CRS to help the Group have a consistent approach and standard. I have built up a strong technical knowledge of FATCA/CRS from a global perspective and strive to keep up with developments as they happen. I have developed strong and trusted relationships with many First Names across the business, so am often the first point of contact for any queries that arise.

What are FATCA and CRS?
The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and Common Reporting Standard (CRS) are both tax information reporting initiatives and present significant structural changes in all government’s efforts to improve global tax compliance. This initiative started with the implantation of US FATCA and this has now evolved to become a global programme.

Why are they important?
Both FATCA and CRS are engrained in legislation so First Names Group must comply on behalf of clients and the Group – not complying would be against the law and could incur a fine or prosecution. FATCA also imposes a 30% withholding tax.

My working day looks like…
I arrive in the office, log on, make a cuppa and then start checking through my emails received overnight. No two days are ever the same as much of my work depends on which areas the project team are concentrating on at the time, as well as individual enquiries received from our different offices.

The favourite part of my job is…
Helping people and teams cope with complex reporting. Dealing with people from all areas of the business and taking something that is quite complicated and trying to make it understandable for all. I like the fact that I never stop learning as regulations keep evolving and changing shape – it means I never get a chance to become bored!

At work I couldn’t live without...
Having an element of wit and humour every day.

Why I like being a First Name:
I like feeling part of something – it’s an exciting group that is really growing and making a name for itself. I believe it is the people who work for First Names Group that are helping build our reputation and brand recognition; I find that motivating and thrilling.

How do you relax outside of work?
I am married to a fantastic man who is very lovely but hyperactive and can’t sit still for more than ten minutes. This means I get roped into all sorts of shenanigans such as kayaking, jet skiing, wakeboarding, cycling, hiking, fishing, glamping etc.

We are lucky enough to have a small holding with alpacas, sheep, pygmy goats, ducks, hens, doves, several bee hives, a Maine Coon cat and two Siberian Huskies. Oh and my husband is just in the process of getting a bird of prey of his own – that should be interesting… I never thought I’d say I was a falconer!

My husband and I are both real home birds (and modern day hippies) so we try to live a self-reliant lifestyle where we can – we absolutely love sharing our passion for wildlife, flora and fauna, home produce and good home cooked fayre with our many fantastic friends.

Oh and I do love a glass or two of wine, or a cocktail, or a nice gin and tonic...!
